Case Summary

A 65-year-old female patient presented to Geetanjali Multispeciality Hospital, Wai, with:

  • Loss of sensation below both knees

  • Inability to stand or walk without support

These symptoms had progressively worsened, raising concerns of spinal cord compression.

Diagnosis: A Hidden Thoracic Spinal Tumor

MRI Whole Spine Screening revealed:

  • A Schwannoma (benign nerve sheath tumor)

  • Location: T8-T9 vertebral level

  • Tumor was compressing the spinal cord, pushing it completely to the left side

The tumor was disrupting nerve signals, causing mobility loss and sensory deficits.

Surgical Plan & Execution

Planned Procedure:

  • Spinal Tumor Excision

  • Spinal Stabilization with Titanium Screws and Rods

The surgery was performed by a multidisciplinary team, under general anesthesia, using microsurgical precision and spinal fixation technology.

Intraoperative Highlights

✔️ Complete tumor removal without spinal cord injury

✔️ Spinal alignment restored

✔️ Stability achieved through instrumented fixation

The tumor (Schwannoma) was successfully excised, decompressing the spinal cord and preventing further neurological damage.

Post-Surgery Outcome: A Miraculous Recovery

Within just 4 days post-operation:

  • The patient regained sensations

  • Started walking with physiotherapy support

Today, she is fully mobile, pain-free, and walking confidently again — a testament to timely intervention and expert neurosurgical care.

Why Early Diagnosis & Surgical Care Matter

Untreated spinal tumors can lead to:

  • Permanent paralysis

  • Irreversible nerve damage

  • Progressive mobility loss

Early diagnosis and surgical removal restore function, relieve compression, and prevent complications.
