Understanding Esophageal Stricture
An esophageal stricture is an abnormal narrowing of the food pipe that causes difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). While balloon dilatation helps many patients, some strictures become refractory—meaning symptoms keep returning despite repeated treatment. In such cases, endoscopic stent placement offers long-term relief.
Patient Overview
A 40-year-old gentleman presented at Geetanjali Multispeciality Hospital, Wai with
• Difficulty swallowing solid foods
• Grade 1 dysphagia
• Symptoms recurring after multiple dilatations
Initial endoscopy revealed a mid-esophageal benign stricture. He underwent TTS Balloon Dilatation, which provided immediate relief for a month. However, he later developed recurrent dysphagia, prompting evaluation for definitive management. Why the Stricture Was “Refractory” Despite repeated dilatations, the patient’s symptoms kept returning.
Refractory strictures significantly affect nutrition, lifestyle, and long-term quality of life. To avoid repeated interventions, esophageal stenting becomes the preferred treatment.
The Advanced Endoscopic Procedure
The patient underwent Endoscopic Self-Expanding Metallic Stent (SEMS) placement—a minimally invasive therapeutic technique that restores esophageal patency.
Procedure Highlights
✔ A fully covered Hanaro SEMS (18mm × 100mm) was deployed under fluoroscopic guidance
✔ The stent was secured proximally using hemoclips to prevent migration
✔ Provides sustained dilatation of the strictured segment
✔ Eliminates the need for frequent balloon/bougie dilatations
✔ Stent planned for removal after 6 weeks
The procedure was successfully performed under sedation by Dr. Narendra Chopade, assisted by Dr. Siddhant Kaddu and the GMH Endoscopy Team.
Benefits of SEMS Stenting
• Long-term symptom relief
• Minimally invasive & well tolerated
• Quick recovery and early discharge
• Suitable for recurrent or complex strictures
